Train Before You Travel: A 4-Week Prep Plan for Your Next Escape

Train Before You Travel: A 4-Week Prep Plan for Your Next Escape

Wondering how to prepare for a fitness retreat? Here's a simple 4-week training plan covering mobility, conditioning, cardio, sleep and packing, so you arrive ready to enjoy the week, not survive it.

You've found your next escape, the dates are in the calendar and there's a flight search open in another tab. Now the nerves creep in: am I actually fit enough for this?

Short answer: probably, already. Longer answer: here's exactly how to spend the next four weeks so you arrive feeling ready, not nervous.

Find your next escape.

Why you don’t need to be "fit enough"

Let's get this out of the way first, because it's the question we get asked more than any other.

A Salt Escape isn't a boot camp and it isn't a test. Our coaches build every session to be tough but scalable. The workout meets you where you are, not the other way around. The crew arriving alongside you will be at all different levels, too. If you're already working out three times a week, you've got exactly the base you need. The anxiety is normal. Almost everyone who's ever landed on a Salt Escape felt some version of it beforehand.

The nerves fade fast once you're there. Find your next escape.

A simple 4-week ramp

Think of this as four gears. The goal isn't to arrive exhausted, it's to arrive switched on and confident.

Week 1: mobility first

Aim for ten to fifteen minutes of movement daily, plus two easy full-body sessions. Nothing heroic. The aim is to wake the body up and build the habit of showing up consistently.

Week 2: build conditioning

Two to three functional strength sessions this week. Bodyweight is fine: squats, lunges, push-ups, rows. You're building the kind of base that makes the coached sessions feel purposeful rather than punishing.

Week 3: base cardio

Three steady-state sessions of thirty to forty minutes each. Run, cycle, row, whatever you enjoy most. The point is aerobic base, not speed. If you can hold a conversation throughout, you're doing it right.

Week 4: combine, then taper

Bring everything together early in the week: a full-body session, a cardio day, a mobility session. Then ease right off in the final few days before you fly. Arrive rested. The week ahead will do the rest.

Explore destinations.

Recovery and sleep in the run-up

Protect your sleep like it's part of the programme. Poor sleep in the two weeks before you travel means you'll arrive already running on empty, and the first couple of training days will feel harder than they need to. Aim for seven to eight hours, wind down properly and keep alcohol in check.

Build hydration habits early too, especially if you're heading somewhere warm. Your body adapts to heat better when it's consistently well-hydrated going in. A litre before you leave the house each morning is a habit worth starting now.

What to pack for training in the heat

Keep it simple and keep it breathable.

Lightweight, moisture-wicking kit you've actually trained in before: never debut new kit on a Salt Escape. Trainers you trust on varied surfaces. A reusable water bottle. High SPF. A cap for the outdoor sessions. A light layer for early mornings when the temperature drops before the sun's properly up.

Ready to put it to use? Find your escape.

Mindset: arriving ready to enjoy, not survive

Here's the honest truth about Salt Escapes: the training is epic, but it's not why people come back.

They come back for the crew. For the boat day. For the long table dinners. For the feeling at the end of the week: proud of what they did, and already wondering when they can do it all over again.

Your next escape is waiting. Find your next escape.
