How fit do you need to be for our Tulum Escape?

Daily workouts, swimming through cenotes and tacos on a boat in the Caribbean… Our Tulum Escape brings plenty of movement, with a private plunge pool waiting outside your bedroom between adventures.

So, how fit do you actually need to be?

Tulum is an active week. You’ll train every day and we want those workouts to challenge you. But you don’t need to be training twice a day at home to join us.

What you do need is a good base level of fitness, some consistency with your training and a willingness to get stuck in.

What are the workouts like?

Expect a mix of strength, conditioning and cardio, with dumbbells, kettlebells, bodyweight movements, running and ergs all likely to make an appearance.

Every session is led by our Salt coaches and designed to challenge you, whatever your particular strengths are. You might feel more at home with a dumbbell than on a run. There’s room for both.

The aim isn't for everyone to do exactly the same thing at exactly the same pace. Our coaches will push you when there’s more in the tank and scale movements where needed.

You’ll work hard, but you won’t be left behind.

What happens when we're not training?

Quite a lot!

One day takes you underground to swim and snorkel through Tulum's cenotes. Another takes you out onto the Caribbean for Boat Day, with swimming, snorkelling, tacos and cold drinks on deck.

There’s time to explore Tulum Town, hang out by the main pool or disappear back to your own private plunge pool. And if you still have energy to burn by Friday, there’s the option to head out on an ATV adventure through the jungle.

And what about recovery?

This is the other half of the Salt equation. Yoga is built into the week to loosen everything off between sessions, alongside guided breathwork and cold plunges.

Then there’s the Temazcal.

Our hacienda has its own traditional Mexican sweat lodge, where you'll take part in a guided Temazcal experience before cooling things right down with a cold plunge.

And sometimes recovery looks less impressive on paper: a few hours by the pool doing absolutely nothing.

We highly recommend those sessions, too.

What should I do before I go?

You don't need to suddenly start training twice a day. In fact, please don't!

The best thing you can do is arrive with a good fitness base and enough consistency behind you that several active days in a row don't come as a shock.

A good starting point would be:

  • 2 strength or conditioning sessions a week
  • 1 to 2 easy runs or cardio sessions
  • Some mobility or yoga alongside your training
  • Plenty of walking and general movement

If you're already training consistently, keep doing what you're doing.

If things have been a little more hit and miss lately, focus on getting back into a routine rather than trying to become an athlete overnight.

What if everyone else is fitter than me?

This is one of the questions we hear most.

The reality is that every Salt group has a mix of fitness levels, training backgrounds and things they're good at.

There will be fast runners. Strong lifters. People who can somehow hold a plank forever. And people who would happily never see another burpee again.

You don't need to be the best at everything. Nobody is!

Our coaches are there to make sure you get a good workout for your level, while still training as part of the group.

Bring a good fitness base. Your coaches will help you choose the movements, weights and pace for each session.

So, am I fit enough for Tulum?

If you already exercise regularly and feel comfortable taking on a challenging workout, you're probably starting from a good place.

If you've barely trained for the past six months, we'd recommend giving yourself some time to build that base before joining us. The fitter you arrive, the more you'll be able to throw yourself into everything the week has planned.

A good fitness base helps you enjoy the whole week: the workouts, breakfast with the crew, swimming through cenotes and heading out on Boat Day.

And having your own plunge pool waiting outside your bedroom certainly doesn't hurt.
